Individuals and whole communities are better able to escape grinding poverty when microfinance is included in a well-conceived, holistic development strategy, says Rich Stearns, President of World Vision US

Integration with other parts of World Vision’s transformational development and relief programming has been identified as VisionFund’s unique strength.
The hardworking poor have gritty determination and the vision to succeed. What they need are economic tools such as credit, training, and access to markets, but they also need solid footing that comes from living in a healthy community. World Vision provides access to clean water, stable food sources, health care, and education; while, VisionFund provides microcredit loans boosting the income of the poor and creating a powerful economic engine that can move communities beyond poverty.

By creating new jobs, stimulating the local economy, and working directly with World Vision’s relief and development programs, tremendous opportunities emerge to multiply impact.

Rural Challenges: Most of the world’s microenterprise services target urban dwellers, neglecting the poorest populations in rural areas. World Vision’s specialized rural credit programs bring sustainable growth to impoverished farmers.

AIDS Pandemic: In several African countries hard-hit by HIV and AIDS, VisionFund’s microfinance interventions are sustaining communities. The integration of credit opportunities for orphans and widows with World Vision’s HIV/AIDS response is helping to boost vulnerable local economies.

Gender: VisionFund specifically seeks women as clients because of the empowerment opportunities and the lasting impact it brings to their families and communities. VisionFund’s approach recognises that women often face unequal access to participation in the World’s economic system.

Emergency & Disaster Relief: Microfinance programs can lessen the harsh effects of a humanitarian emergency by strengthening household income, making goods and services available again, and boosting savings to act as a cushion in the event of future disasters.
